About the League of Ukrainian Canadians and the League of Ukrainian Canadian Women
Aims and goals
The League of Ukrainian Canadians (LUC) and League of Ukrainian Canadian Women (LUCW) are not-for-profit community organizations, whose aims and goals are to help develop a strong and united Ukrainian Canadian community, as well as civil society and democracy in Ukraine.
Key activities of LUC and LUCW include:
- Foster integration into Canadian society;
- Resisting the pressures of assimilation by nurturing Ukrainian identity in Canada through educational and cultural endeavours;
- Actively engaging the Ukrainian Canadian community in Canada’s political life;
- Facilitating the rebirth of Ukraine’s historical memory and the preservation of Ukrainian Canadian identity;
- Increasing awareness and the positive image of Ukraine in Canada;
- Engaging Ukrainian Canadian families in community life through social activities;
- Assisting the citizens of Ukraine through humanitarian aid;
- Developing partnerships with like-minded organizations in order to facilitate the development of civil society in Ukraine.
- The Canadian League for the Liberation of Ukraine or CLLU (today the League of Ukrainian Canadians) was founded in Toronto in 1949. Since its inception, the CLLU’s goal was to build bridges to organizations with similar aims and goals, to facilitate Ukraine’s path to independence, and to develop and expand the life of the Ukrainian community in Canada and the diaspora as a whole.
- At first, the National Executive of the CLLU included a women’s representative, but in December 1955, on the basis of a well-developed network of women’s representations, the Women’s Association of the CLLU was founded with its own procedures and by-laws, and its own executive.
- The Women’s Association began its history alongside the CLLU and was guided by the same principles, aims and goals. Additionally, however, it also addressed the social, charitable and cultural-educational needs of the community.
- Activities of both the CLLU and the Women’s Association, especially in the internal Ukrainian political, social, educational and cultural areas, focused on the preservation and development of Ukrainian identity among their members and the Ukrainian community in general.
- At the same time, the CLLU and the Women’s Association were engaged in external political activity. Throughout their existence, they initiated or actively participated in hundreds if not thousands of important political events at the national level with the aim of informing Canadian public opinion regarding Ukraine.
- With the renewal of Ukraine’s independence in 1991, a new period of the Leagues’ activities began and the Leagues adopted their new names as the League of Ukrainian Canadians and the League of Ukrainian Canadian Women.
- There are currently 11 branches of the LUC and 5 branches of the LUCW in Canada.
- LUC is a long-time active member of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) and the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), and the LUCW actively participates in the National Women’s Council of Canada, the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations, and in the Ukrainian World Congress.
- The LUC and LUCW are headed by national executives based in
Toronto. Executive members are elected for three-year terms at Triennial
Conventions. Annual General Meetings are held regularly, as are regional
Conferences and meetings, to update members on the status of projects,
discuss ongoing and emerging issues, and provide guidelines for future
activities.
